微軟目前正在努力研發新一代Windows更新，我們說的不是Windows Update 2，而是代號“Threshold”的Windows更新，我們還不清楚這個更新是否就是Windows 9，但是它肯定會和過去所有Windows都有所不同。
據悉，Windows Threshold將進一步遠離Windows 8采用的Modern UI，即所謂瓷磚界面，在某些Windows Threshold版本當中，Modern UI默認禁用，用戶需要手動開啟Modern UI。但是在平板電腦上，Windows Threshold的Modern UI默認開啟，在桌面電腦上Windows Threshold的Modern UI默認關閉，顯示微軟去Modern UI化設計思想。
Windows Threshold允許應用程序以窗口模式在桌面上運行，並帶有全新設計的開始菜單，習慣鼠標鍵盤的用戶也不再會被Modern UI困擾。當然微軟也重新設計瞭Windows Threshold的Modern UI，隻是將其隱藏瞭起來。因此，當用戶第一眼看到Windows Threshold，就很容易分辨出來它不是Windows 8.1。
盡管Windows Threshold還處於早期開發階段，但是顯然微軟已經從善如流，去掉瞭大傢都不喜歡的Modern UI。
